  • Group Introduction and Research Objectives
The mission (role, goal) of LED R&D Lab. is to strengthen competitiveness of existing LED business at LG as well as to create new opportunities for business sector through the development of innovative high performance devices based on GaN and GaAs related compound semiconductor technology. LED R&D Lab. constantly seeks to acquire proprietary technologies and reinforce its core capability in order to create added value for LED business at LG.
    Major Research Accomplishments
Since LED research has been started in 1994, LED R&D Lab. has developed Korea?¡¥s first high brightness blue LED in 1997. Also, we have developed blue LED for PCS LCD backlight and camera flash in 2004. Currently, LED R&D Lab. focuses its efforts on the development of high power blue/green/red LEDs for LCD TV backlights.
    Major Areas of Research
Current research activities in LED R&D Lab. can be divided into 3 groups, LED Epitaxial Growth Group, LED Process & Package Group, New Technology Group. For the area of epitaxial growth, blue LED epitaxial growth techniques have been developed for PCS LCD backlight and camera flash, and development of high brightness blue/green/red LEDs and UV LED is being actively pursued for backlighting of mid to large area LCD displays such as LCD TV. LED process & package group has been involved in the development of the entire process, fabrication, and package technologies related to etching, electrode, photolithography, lens, and package materials. The area of the research for new technology group includes use of new substrate materials and development of new opto-electronic devices.
